JENNA LEANED FORWARD in her seat when Buck pulled into the parking area of a junkyard. The place looked deserted and ominous. The line of rusting junkers and newer-looking cars and trucks that had been crashed appeared to roll out for acres. The gravel parking area flanking the trailer-turned-office was empty and the office was dark.
Definitely deserted.
“This is where he said to come?”
This didn’t make sense. She surveyed the vast field of damaged vehicles. Surely her daughter wasn’t here.
The thought had no more formed in her head than another car rolled into the parking lot.
Then another after that.
Disbelief and fear commingled, sending Jenna’s heart into a panic.
“What did you do, Buck?”
He met her gaze, his own implacable. “We have less than two hours of daylight left. We needed help, Jenna. We can’t do this alone.”
Her breath stalled in her lungs as she surveyed the acres of oxidizing and damaged metal once more. There were so many places to hide. “Oh, God.”
A towering chain-link fence raced along the boundary of the property on all sides for as far as she could see. The side that ran parallel with the road was obscured with green webbing in an effort to camouflage the ugliness of what lay behind. But here, she could see clearly beyond the massive drive-thru gate that towered next to the office, heavy chains holding it closed. How would they even get in there?
She was out of the vehicle and headed for the gate before the command fully synapsed in her brain. She had to get to her daughter.
Could she climb the gate? She stared upward, and estimated the height at ten or maybe twelve feet. She had to try.
“Hold up, Jenna.”
George Farley strode toward her, a large tool in his right hand. She frowned. A tool similar to the long-handled pruning shears she had at home. The kind used for clipping small tree limbs. No, she decided as he drew closer. Not shears…bolt cutters.
With just two quick snaps the chain fell away. A young man she recognized as Buck’s driver, Rush Jackson, helped Farley pull the gate open just far enough to slip through.
Buck waited for her to go ahead of him. She threaded easily through the opening. Buck followed. Then Lori Houser and Charlene Talley. The team members Buck had called in as backup were well prepared, all wore jeans and sweat shirts, gloves and hiking boots.
Lori passed Jenna a pair of gloves. “You might need these.” She offered a pair to Buck as well.
Rush provided flashlights for everyone. “We may run out of daylight,” he commented with a brief smile at Jenna. “This’ll help.”
George had pushed the gate back to its closed position and hung the chain so that it looked as if it were still locked. If the owner drove by he would know something was up. She supposed the effect was for anyone else who might notice the vehicles parked in the lot after hours.
Buck called out names and search directions. “Watch where you poke your heads and your hands.
